Hi everyone! For those of you who know me well, you know I am OBSESSED with skincare! I’m always doing research on the best products for my skin type. I remember in high school, people used to call my bathroom a Walgreens with the amount of products I owned. Even though I am 25 years old and still haven’t found my end-all be-all skincare routine, I am not giving up hope. I’m always optimistic when it comes to my skin, and I’m taking new steps to help me get there.
A quick, little background on my skin… I have struggled with acne since I was about 12 years old. As I have gotten older, and especially in recent months, my skin has gotten worse than it has been in a while. Not only am I trying to fight blemishes, large pores, and oily skin, I am also trying to prevent the aging process. So you can see my dilemma when I say I haven’t found my holy grail skincare routine yet when I am trying to deal with adult acne, wrinkles, and dullness. But I am taking it a step further with what I, and you, can be doing in addition to your everyday skincare routine with a skincare specialist.
Recently I got my first ever HydraFacial, and I am hooked already! I can’t believe I waited this long to try the treatment that everyone raves about. I had been wanting to try this facial for so long, and with how my bad my skin has been recently, I knew if I was ever going to take the dive, now was the time! I received my HydraFacial at Khoobehi & Associates, which was so nice. The aesthetician who performed my facial, Zelia was super helpful! Before we began, she went through the entire process of the HydraFacial, what to expect from the experience and discussed my skin concerns with me. We both knew that a HydraFacial would definitely help my issues.
When you hear the word facial, you’re probably like me and think of a zen spa with calm music and a relaxing massage. However, a HydraFacial is not your typical spa experience. A HydraFacial is basically a nice, deep cleanse of the skin, deeper than you can do at home. It is pretty clinical to get the job done, and there is no massage or anything like that as it is performed in a doctor’s office. It’s a good time to get a HydraFacial when your skin is feeling and looking dull and is ready for a good cleaning, which I could absolutely tell I needed.
There are four steps in the HydraFacial process: cleanse, exfoliate, extract, and hydrate. If you’ve ever received a microdermabrasion treatment before, the technique is very similar, but it is really wet. Following the cleansing of the skin, during the exfoliation, two of the main ingredients that are good for acne and deep cleaning the skin that are used are glycolic and salicylic acids. Following this comes the extractions and then the hydration step. For hydration, the main ingredient that is used is hyaluronic acid, which is basically a drink of water for the skin. During the hydrate step, you are putting the hydration right back into your skin that has been lost. Even if you have super oily skin like me, you need to hydrate your skin!
At the end of the facial, the aesthetician used LED lights to calm my skin. First, she used a blue LED light that kills acne causing bacteria, followed by a red LED light that calms the redness in the skin down. After the facial, the aesthetician shows you the “gunkie jar,” the waste container that catches all of the gunk from your pores during your treatment. It’s reassuring to see all of the bad stuff that was removed from your skin floating in the jar. From start to finish the HydraFacial lasted about 30 minutes, maybe even less than that.
One of the best parts of the HydraFacial, besides all of the great benefits it does for your skin, is that there is basically no downtime or hiding out afterward. In fact, I didn’t have any visible signs after the facial, but I still ditched makeup for 24 hours so my skin could breathe. It is very important to wear sunscreen everyday, but especially the days following the HydraFacial. You have removed the top dead layer of skin so this new, fresh layer that is on top is extremely tender and fragile toward the sun.
Throughout the facial, they are pulling out impurities and removing the dead skin cells. Now your skincare products don’t have to fight through that dead layer of skin, and helps your products work better. Your makeup will even look better! You know what they say… the key to good makeup application is good skin!
Depending on your skin type and what issues you are facing, you can possibly break out after the HydraFacial, some people do and some people don’t. Let me tell you, man did I break out! About three hours after leaving my appointment I had four new pimples pop up. This is all because of the deep clean that is pulling all of the impurities of the skin to the surface. But that’s okay! All of these blemishes that formed, were previous under the skin bumps that were finally getting cleared out.
I am almost a week out now and my skin is noticeably smoother and still has the post-HydraFacial glow. I definitely plan on continuing to get HydraFacials so I can really see the full effects. If you are committed to your skin, you should receive a HydraFacial once a month. And if you’re wondering if a HydraFacial is right for you, the answer is yes! HydraFacials help with fine lines and wrinkles, elasticity and firmness, even skin tone, skin texture, dark spots, oily and congested skin, and enlarged pores. It’s for everyone!
